What they are

If your approach to weight loss is to reduce calories, low calories sugar substitutes can be an attacting idea. Saccharin and aspartame are two of the most common sugar substitue. They are found in producst ranging from chewing gum to ice cream.

Are they bad?

They have both been subjects of controvesity over their safety - however after reviewing scientific studies, the US Food and Drug Agency (FDA) determined in 1981 that aspartame was safe for use in foods.

Granulated Sugar

In moderation - you can use substitues to replace may of your sugar uses. However if you're used to having 2 teaspoons of sugar in a cup of tea or coffee, just try cutting down to one - it's likely that will satify your sweet tooth enough. The calorie control council has soon useful information on fat substitues, but it is sponsored by manufactures so it may not be totally bias free...
